Two divisions based on newspaper
circulation: A (18,000 and over) and BC (17,999 and under).
If submitting entries by mail, the following information must be provided:
name of newspaper, online editor and phone number in case a judge needs
assistance, Web address (URL), and how often the site is updated and when.
For newspapers with paywalls or
metered sites, a username and password that can be used throughout the
judging period (February 15-March 15, 2012) must be provided, regardless of
whether the contest entry is made online or by mail.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
ORGANIZATION: Does the
Web site follow a logical on-line sequence, beginning with a front page that
leads readers elsewhere? Is there a table of contents? Is navigation of the
site simple and easily understood?
DESIGN:
Is the site visually attractive?
Does it include photography and graphics or text-only?
INTERACTIVITY: Does the
online product provide readers with an opportunity to contact the newspaper’s staff? For example, can readers respond to daily polls, complain
to columnists, submit letters to the editor, and suggest story ideas?
INNOVATIONS: Is the
online newspaper designed to present the local news of the day? Does it
provide state and national news of the day? Does it offer subscribers links
to more information on a topic, more photos? Does the site include methods
of communication that aren’t traditionally used in newspapers such
as audio, video or chat boards? Does it provide information that a
traditional newspaper can’t afford to print in full? Does it give readers access to the paper’s archives?
